Ventifact Ridge
Near Death Valley's most colorful attraction, Artists Palette, is a little-known ridge with some very unique rocks: ventifacts. This wonderful, hidden treasure is a place that most people drive right by without even noticing. And you won't find it marked on any map. What makes the rocks here so unusual is the way they have been eroded and the degree of that erosion. A "ventifact" is a rock that has had its shape and surface changed by windblown sand. The pits and grooves that this powerful force has etched into the volcanic rocks here has created some beautiful patterns. |
