Road Trips:

Hunter Mountain Road and Racetrack

This is one of the longest and most scenic 4WD Road Trips in this Guide! You'll see: Lee Flat, Hunter Mountain, Hidden Valley and Racetrack Valley.  There are several possible side trips, too, so plan to spend a whole day!

Where:
Sandwiched between Saline Valley and northern Death Valley.

Badwater Road

Badwater Road is not only one of the main roads through Death Valley but it is also packed with many of the Parks' most popular attractions including Artist Palette, Mushroom Rock, Golden Canyon, Devil's Golf Course, Natural Bridge Canyon, Ashford Mill and, of course, Badwater itself - the lowest elevation in the western hemisphere.

Where:
South central Death Valley.

Hikes & Photo Tours:

Happy Canyon

Although the canyon is 7 miles long, you don't have to hike the whole thing to enjoy its unique beauty.  We only explored the first 1.5 miles and were rewarded with the tallest waterfall in the canyon and many smaller cascades, too.

Where:
The western Panamint Mountains a few miles northeast of Ballarat.

Mosaic Canyon

One of your favorites!  A beautiful canyon that's easy to access, Mosaic Canyon offers polished marble whirlpools, narrow, dry waterfalls and fascinating geology.  A must see!

Where:
The Tucki Mountains just south of Stovepipe Wells.

Geology:

Amargosa Chaos & Jubilee Pass

The colorful and oddly shaped mountains near the town of Shoshone have been puzzling geologists for years.

Where:
The southeastern portion of Death Valley in Jubilee and Salsbury Pass.

Ubehebe Crater

Located in the northern section of Death Valley, this attraction can be seen from the parking lot or you can take one of the two hikes we describe. Both are strenuous but rewarding.  The Rim Trail is not difficult once you get up to the top rim of the crater but the Crater Floor Trail is grueling both up and down.

Where:
West of Scotty's Castle.

Photography:

Dante's View

This is one of Death Valley's grandest scenic view points.  The lowest and highest points in the lower 48 states can be viewed from here at the same time.

Where:
South central Death Valley.

The Grandstand

At the northern end of the Racetrack Playa is as unusual rock outcropping called The Grandstand.  It's odd location and strange shapes create interesting shadows on the playa floor.

Where:
In the southern portion of Death Valley.

Points of Interest:

Ashford Mill

The Ashford Mill (built in 1915) was, at one time, surrounded by thick concrete walls and processed ore from the Black Mountains.

Where:
The southern portion of Death Valley.

Rhyolite, Nevada

Once a booming city in the early 1900's, Rhyolite's over 100 buildings are almost totally gone now.  You can still see, however, the famous "bottle house", the old train station and part of the 3 story shown in the picture at left.  It's easy to get to and definitely worth the trip!

Where:
Outside of Death Valley National Park and just west of Beatty, Nevada.
