The mysterious "moving rocks" of The Racetrack are scattered all over the Racetrack Playa but are concentrated at the southern end.  After falling off of the steep mountain on the south side of this dry lakebed, the rocks roll out onto the playa [glossary] and come to rest - or do they?  Many of them move or "race" across the flat lakebed.  The evidence of their movement is clear because they leave behind "tracks" of their travel in the mud.  Not all of the rocks on the playa move and not all rocks that do move make tracks.
