Lookout Mountain and Minnietta Mine Road Trip & Hike This page is not included in the sample version. Click here to see available pages. Located on the northwestern side of Panamint Valley, this area was one of the first mining camps in the Death Valley region. Mining at the Lookout District began in 1875; just after Death Valley's first big strike near Panamint City on the other side of the valley in 1873. Silver was discovered here, high atop a windy ridge in the Argus Range, and the site was named Lookout because of its unobstructed views of both Panamint Valley and the Panamint Mountains.
